Herbert L. Burress
Herbert L. Burress, 87, of Franklin, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at Franciscan St. Francis Health Indianapolis.
He was born June 5, 1926, in Martin County, to Lloyd and Mary Lula (Harris) Burress.
He married Doris J. (Powell) Burress on Dec. 24, 1948, in Martin County. She survives.
He was a lifelong farmer, operating farms in Bargersville, Morgantown, Flat Rock and Needham. He also had worked at Crane Naval Base. He later worked for Johnson Chevrolet in Indianapolis as a body repair service man and at General Motors Bus and Truck Group in Indianapolis.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He attended Honey Creek United Methodist Church in Greenwood. He was a member of American Legion Post 205 in Franklin and Waverly Masonic Lodge No. 615 and was a lifetime member of Mount Zion Wesleyan Church in Martin County.
Survivors include his children, John W. (Peggy) Burress of Franklin, James E. (Pauline) Burress of New Whiteland, Herbert L. Burress Jr. of Franklin, Debrah (Jeff) Taylor of Greenwood and Dianne (Timothy) Gibson of Humble, Texas; a sister, Helen (the late Jerry) Prince of Springville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Charles Cross of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Perry M. Burress; an infant daughter, Katherine Burress; sisters, Lela Flo Krodel, Mamie Wilma Snyder, Nora Ivylene Dillon, Mary Ruth Davis, Esther Grace Cole and Vonda Cross; and brothers, Charles Wesley Burress and Robert Glenn Burress.
The Revs. David Mark Owens and Brad Miller will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Friday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. Morton St. (U.S. 31 South) in Franklin. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin with full military honors.
