Richard Lee ‘Duke’ DuKate
Richard Lee “Duke” DuKate, 83, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2013, at his residence in Franklin surrounded by his family.
He was born on Nov. 12, 1929, in Springfield, Ohio, to the late Elbert LeRoy and Mabel Irene (Chappel) DuKate.
He married Frederica “Freddie” (Willis) DuKate on June 8, 1954, in Petersburg. She lovingly survives in Franklin.
Other survivors include one son, Michael and wife, Debbie, DuKate of Franklin; five grandchildren, Chris (Chelsea) DuKate, Craig (Ellen) DuKate, Amy DuKate, Evan DuKate and Ryan DuKate; and two great-grandchildren, Cason DuKate and Kennedy DuKate.
He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1948. Duke was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean War. He served as a radar operator as well as crew chief.
He was employed by Western Electric for 31 years as a line supervisor. After retirement, he worked for DuKate Fine Remodeling for 15 years with his son, Mike.
He was a member of First Mount Pleasant Baptist Church for 40-plus years and recently enjoyed attending Journey Church in Franklin.
He enjoyed construction; model building and watching NASCAR and the Indianapolis Colts. Duke loved spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandson and his dog, Penny. Duke also remained interested in the progress of DuKate Fine Remodeling during his later years.
The Rev. Jim Clayton will conduct a celebration of Duke’s life at 10 a.m. Monday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
