Doris Jane Hubbell

Doris Jane Hubbell of Greenwood died with her family by her side Saturday, July 20, 2013, at the age of 72.

Doris was born Aug. 11, 1940, to the late Frank and Dorothy Dowden.

She married Carl Hubbell on Aug 12, 1962. He preceded her in death.

Doris is survived by her two sons, Tim (Amanda) Hubbell and Todd (Kacy) Hubbell; her sisters, Judy (David) Rogers and Helen Sims; and her brother, David (Nancy) Dowden.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Carl.

Doris graduated from Southport High School in 1958 and Franklin College in 1962. She later graduated from Butler University with her Master of Education degree.

Doris taught at Isom Elementary School in the Greenwood school district for 33 years.

Over her career, she touched the lives of literally thousands of students. She developed strong friendships with her fellow teachers that continued well past her retirement in 1997, and she remained an active member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma sorority.

During summer breaks, Doris and Carl traveled all over the country. To keep track of the places they visited, they began collecting shot glasses with the location names on them. This collection grew to more than 8,000, many of which were displayed throughout their house.

While collecting shot glasses, Doris and Carl also became interested in selling antiques and collectibles. They would buy merchandise at garage sales, flea markets and stores and sell it at antique and collectible booths around the city. In the early ’90s, they became the co-promoters of the Gray Goose Antique and Collectible show in Franklin. While now under new ownership and with a new name, this show continues today.

Doris’ other interests were spending as much time as possible with her friends and family. She loved to play games. Card games, puzzles, dominoes, you name it — she would try to beat you at it. She also loved sports, especially the Colts, Pacers and any of the local college teams.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St. The Rev. Tom Bridges will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 3500 DePauw Blvd., Suite 2070, Indianapolis, IN 46268; or National Kidney Foundation of Indiana, 911 E. 86th St., No. 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240; or Central Indiana Youth for Christ, 1641 E.
