Mr. Manford Eugene “Gene” Wright

Mr. Manford Eugene “Gene” Wright, 85, of Greenwood, passed away April 12, 2013, at Greenwood Health and Living Center.

He was born May 29, 1927, a son of Harold and Polly Wright. They preceded him in death.

Also preceding him in death were his first wife, Gertrude “Trudy” Wright; and a sister, Yvonne Craig.

Gene proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. He worked in sales and later as vice president at Schilling Chilling and Heating.

Gene had a special place in his heart for his family. He so loved to entertain children with his endless stories and special magic tricks.

He was especially talented in writing and reciting poetry. He had a published book of his works and usually could recall each of the poems he wrote.

He was very proud of his gardening skills, always having beautiful flowers and trees. Along with that came his fondness for bird watching and making sure his feathered friends always had food and a safe environment to live in. He also was very talented at woodworking, especially carving. He could take a piece of wood and carve it, then finish it off to be a great piece of artwork.

Gene was a 50-year brother of the Charles F. Frank Masonic Lodge in Zionsville. He also was a proud and committed member of Pike Township Lions Club for more than 50 years. He served to help his community and the less fortunate to his utmost ability. Throughout his years of service with the Lions Club, he earned numerous awards and recognitions.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Wiegand-Wright; three children, Dr. Gary Wright of Indianapolis, Gregg (Chris) Wright of Brownsburg and Kathy (Dr. Alan) Sandler of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a stepson, Rick (Barb) Wiegand of Indianapolis; two stepdaughters, Kim Kite of Indianapolis and Robin (Dennis) Klutzke of Greenwood; a sister, Sue (Lou) Barton of Fort White, Fla.; seven grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nine great-stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Monty Barker will conduct a celebration of life at 11 a.m. April 27 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 5252 W. 52nd St., Indianapolis, of which Gene was a lifelong member.

Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, has been entrusted with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Pike Township Lions Club, Attn: Richard Getts, treasurer, 18017 Tallow Wood Lane, Indianapolis, IN, 46236; or to Bethel United Methodist Church, 5252 W. 52nd St., Indianapolis, IN, 46254.
