Gary N. McPherson
Gary N. McPherson, 77, devoted husband and father, passed away at his Greenwood home with his family at his side on Monday, April 15, 2013.
He was born in Indianapolis on July 7, 1935, to Leland and Mauzie (Laughlin) McPherson. Reflecting his love of the outdoors as an avid fisherman and hunter, Gary founded the Outdoorsman Sport Shop upon his retirement from the Indiana State Police, where he was a homicide detective and was instrumental in the origin and formation of the Indiana State Police dive team.
He was a graduate of the Washington High School class of ’53 with continuing education at Franklin College, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
In addition, Gary served his country as a naval reservist for eight years and was a Johnson County Sheriff’s Department merit board member. He was also a 50-year member of Southport F&AM and was of the Protestant faith.
Gary opened his home to many people throughout his life as a mentor and friend and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Gary married the former Winnie Noble on March 10, 1957; and she survives him, as well as his son, G. Douglas (Kay) McPherson; his daughters, Sherry (Don) Trowbridge, and Becky McPherson; a sister, Diane (Mike) Campbell; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, with a Masonic memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
