The Rev. James William Keith, 93, of the Franklin United Methodist Community, retired minister of the United Methodist Church, died Friday March 29, 2013.
Keith was a graduate of Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky., held a Master of Divinity from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Asbury College. Ordained in 1945, Keith was pastor of United Methodist churches in Indiana including Lanesville Charge, Huntingburg, Bloomington Fairview, Columbus First, and Indianapolis Irvington, as well as superintendent of Evansville and New Albany Districts.
After his retirement in 1984, he served as an associate pastor at First and St. Paul United Methodist churches in Largo, Florida and pastor of Jollity United Methodist Church in Indiana.
For the past six years, he has been a volunteer tutor at Webb Elementary School in Franklin where he was a hugely popular “lunch buddy.”
Keith was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Gladys M. Keith in 2012.
He is survived by his son, the Rev. J. William Keith Jr. of Westfield; daughter Carolyn Keith Burr (David G. Lewis) of North Caldwell, NJ.; grandchildren, Matthew K. Burr of Red Hook, Ny., Amanda J. Burr of Brooklyn, NY; and sister, Mary K. Price of Louisville, Ky.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, 1300 East Adams St., Franklin, followed by a memorial service at 11 am.
