Martin S. Alvey Jr.
Martin S. Alvey Jr., 81, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Indianapolis and a former resident of Greenwood.
Martin was born Nov. 10, 1931, in Paoli to Martin S. Sr. and Eva L. (Smith) Alvey. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served during the Korean War.
He married Nancy L. Hayden on June 26, 1954, in Greenwood; they were married for 58 years.
He was employed as a cabinet worker for Miller’s Cabinet Shop. He also worked as a hair stylist, owning and operating two shops, Capri and Razors Edge, for many years. More recently, he worked at Tangles in Greenwood.
Martin enjoyed fishing and watching TV. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Alvey of Indianapolis; three children, Douglas (Cathy) Alvey of Whiteland, and Curtis Alvey and Amy (James) Jarboe, both of Indianapolis; three sisters, Searah Alvey, Ruth Alvey and Mary Rickels, all of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, Ashley (Rob) Yaggi, Kylee (Nathan) Mitchaner, Kristin Alvey, Jared Neely, Dylan Jarboe, Albert Pittman and Kristopher Pittman; and five great-grandchildren, Connor Eakle, Camden Alvey, Peyton Pittman, Kaizer Pittman and Savannah Pittman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Martin Isaac Alvey; a daughter, Pamela Jo Alvey; three sisters, Alma Horton, Angie Cook and Annie Alvey; and three brothers, George, Jesse and Leonard Alvey.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. 31 North. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Glenns Valley, Greenwood.
