C. Joan (Day) McCarty, 83, a longtime resident of White River Township, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Franciscan St. Francis Health-Indianapolis.

She was born April 17, 1929, in Indianapolis, to Cecil and Doris (Pearcy) Day. She married Richard Mark McCarty on July 14, 1946, at Mount Pleasant Christian Church in White River Township. He preceded her in death Sept. 13, 2002.

She was a 1946 graduate of Center Grove High School, where she was a cheerleader.

She worked day-to-day with her husband at their farming operation in Johnson County for more than 50 years. She also worked at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Indianapolis.

She was a member of Tri Kappa; Smyrna Shrine Guild, where she was a member of the Arabettes; Johnson County Shrine Club; Johnson County Republicans; Johnson County Republican Women’s Club; Farm Bureau; Mount Pleasant Christian Church; and the Columbia Club in Indianapolis.

Joan enjoyed working hard alongside her husband and family and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a very giving person to her family, friends and many others with a loving spirit.

Survivors include a daughter, Julie D. (Wayne) Dorrell of Greenwood; a son, Richard Mark (Debbie) McCarty of Greenwood; a brother, Ron Day of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Joshua (Jennifer) McCarty of Greenwood, Dusty Dorrell of Spencer, and Adam (Sarah) McCarty and Cassie Jo (Tim) Lett, both of Mooresville; seven great-grandchildren; and special relatives, Lynn Plummer of Martinsville, and Molly Dorrell, Pam Hauk, Cynthia Chambers and Karen Surface, all of Greenwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

The Revs. Matt Swisher and Cameron Bottema will conduct a service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Smith Valley United Methodist Church, 5293 Old Smith Valley Road in Greenwood. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Glenns Valley, Greenwood.
