Dorothy M. Jacobs
Dorothy M. Jacobs, 93, of the Franklin United Methodist Community, passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.
She was born Aug. 28, 1919, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, to Willis and Carrie (Pence) Milhouse.
She married the Rev. George Jacobs on June 27, 1943, in St. Francisville, Ill., and was blessed with 69 years of marriage.
She was a graduate of St. Francisville High School and was the last living graduate of Normal Teachers College at Indiana Central College in Indianapolis in 1939, now known as the University of Indianapolis.
She taught grade school in St. Francisville and for many years was a substitute teacher. They served Evangelical United Brethren churches and then United Methodist churches in Elliot, Peoria, Casey, Aurora and Freeport, Ill.
Upon retirement, they lived on Crescent Lake near Rhinelander, Wis., before moving to the Franklin United Methodist Community.
Surviving are her husband, the Rev. George Jacobs of the Franklin United Methodist Community; a son, the Rev. Mark (Jan) Jacobs of Elgin, Ill.; two daughters, Carolyn (the Rev. Jack) Hartman of West Lafayette and Joyce (Richard) Erfert of Flagstaff, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Teresa (Daniel) White of Muncie, David Hartman of Elkhart, Joshua (Kate) Jacobs of Kettering, Ohio, and Ben Jacobs of Mount Morris, Ill.; and five great-grandchildren, Sarah Figert, Jamal Green, Kendra Kistler, Austin Hartman and Josse Hartman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bishop Paul Milhouse; and a sister, Helen Pierson.
The Revs. Andy Kinsey and Jenothy Rather will conduct a memorial service celebrating the life of Dorothy Jacobs at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, 1300 E. Adams Drive in Franklin. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center in Franklin is handling arrangements.
The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the University of Indianapolis Alumni Scholarship Fund, 1400 E. Hanna Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46227; or Grace United Methodist Church, 1300 E. Adams Drive, Franklin, IN 46131.
