Roy Paul Roman

Roy Paul Roman, 83, passed away Nov. 20, 2012, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was a resident of Franklin.

He was born June 2, 1929 in Middletown, Ohio, to Leroy and Bethel (Ledford) Roman.

He married Betty Jeanne Phillips on Dec. 22, 1950. She lovingly survives in Franklin.

His surviving sister is Bea Scribner of Trenton, Ohio. Paul also is survived by his children, Judith (Glenn) Carlstrand of Franklin, Barbara (Eugene) deRose of Greenwood, Linda (David) Rutherford of Pittsboro, David (Becky) Roman of Guthrie, Okla., Timothy (Glenda) Roman of Nineveh and Tamara Roman of Franklin.

His surviving grandchildren include Ariel Topletz (Adam) Erickson, Jessica Topletz, Sarah Topletz, Natalie deRose, Julie deRose, Brooke Hunsucker (Mike) Walden, Jamie Hunsucker, Bridget (Brian) Hunsucker Bundy, Jenna Hunsucker, Joshua (Mi Ryung) Roman, Kate (David) Roman Gungor, Nate (Michelle) Roman, Isaac Roman, Tyler Roman, Benjamin Roman, Nicholas Roman and Danielle Roman (Ryan) Cheek and Lucas Rutherford.

His surviving great-grandchildren include Malachi, Mathias and Roman Walden, Gage and Lux Bundy, Micah Hunsucker, Brycen Hunsucker, Brianna and Hayden Cheek, and Harry, Elizabeth and Evie Gungor.

Paul was a graduate of Trenton (Ohio) High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University of Ohio.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955, notably in post-war Korea. His rank was LTJG, MSC, USN.

Paul was employed by Eli Lilly and Co. as a department head of sterility and microbial testing. He retired in 1994.

In Franklin, he was a longstanding member of Franklin Community Church. He served in the choir and in countless activities and projects.

His great love of popular, classical and religious music led him to sing with The Voices of Franklin.

As a member of The Gideons International, Paul volunteered in jail ministry for several years.

With the Nomads Volunteers in Mission, Paul and Betty traveled annually in their RV to California, Arizona and Texas to carry out mission projects in construction and other people-oriented work.

Paul’s other volunteer activities include the disaster relief committee of the American Red Cross and the USA Girl Scouts.

He and Betty led their cadette Girl Scout troop on a canoeing trip in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and to the former USAGS horse ranch in Wyoming. He and Betty served on the design committee of the Camp Gallahue lodge.

Paul’s hobbies included ham radio operating, carpentry, camping and travel.

In addition to his travels to Japan and Korea with the military, he traveled to Mexico, Canada, the Republic of Panama and most of the 50 states.

The Rev. Daniel Jepsen will conduct a service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Franklin Community Church, 2005 Upper Shelbyville Road, Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
