Shirley Howard David, 90, passed away Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012. He was a resident of Greenwood.
He was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Helmsburg, Ind., to the late Shirley and Mary David Sr.
He married Rosemary Tinkle on May 1, 1942; and she preceded him in death Jan. 19, 2008.
Shirley is survived by his children, Jeannie (Reinold) Von Fange, Kathy (Tom) Leslie, Patty (Warren) Craft, Steve David and Mike (Elizabeth) David; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Ford, Marjory Linehan and Beulah McCracken.
He graduated from Center Grove High School in 1940 before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He was a 22-year veteran of the Air Force, serving in World War II where he piloted a B-24 on 22 combat missions over Germany, Austria and northern Italy.
He spent the final few years of his military service stationed at the Pentagon as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He achieved rank of chief master sergeant.
He later retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 20 years of service, having served as postmaster in both Crothersville and Edinburgh.
He had a passion for his family and sports, especially golf, having played his last round at The Legends Golf Club in October.
His family will have an informal open house from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Indiana Golf Office, 2625 Hurricane Road, Franklin.
