Mary Jo Smith
Mary Jo (Tongate) Smith, 90, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, in Franklin. She was a resident of Trafalgar.
Mary Jo was born May 17, 1922, in Campbellsville, Ky., to Albertus and Mary F. (Cox) Tongate.
She was employed with Arvin, Morgan Packing Co. and Franklin Plastics as a machine operator, retiring after 17 years service.
She enjoyed gardening and quilting. She loved the outdoors and spent time fishing, mushroom hunting and splitting wood for fires. She was a member of Franklin Memorial Christian Church.
Survivors include two children, Eugene (Shirley) Smith of Peoga and Charles J. (Shirley) Smith of Martinsville; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albertus and Mary Tongate; her husband, Augustus Eugene Smith; a son, Jerry Smith; two brothers, Gilbert and Leander Tongate; and a sister, Mandy Ellen Lloyd.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jessen Funeral Home, Franklin Chapel, 197 E. Jefferson St. Friends and family may call from 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
