The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis will accept new participants for its latest diabetes prevention class series until March 4.
The southside class meets from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Mondays at the Baxter YMCA, 7900 S. Shelby St., Indianapolis.
The class helps people with pre-diabetes or who are at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes reduce their risk through modest lifestyle changes.
Participants must be over 18 years of age and have a BMI of 25 or greater. Risk factors for diabetes include having a family history of Type 2 diabetes, diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy, being physically active less than two days per week, and being over age 45.
Participants meet as a small group for 16 weeks, led by a certified YMCA lifestyle coach. During the sessions they learn how to make healthier food choices, how to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routine, and how to manage a healthy weight.
A payment plan and sliding scale are available for qualifying participants. YMCA membership not required. Child care is available for classes conducted during regular hours.
