A pharmacy chain plans to open a temporary training center in an eastside Greenwood business park.

Walgreens plans to spend about $100,000 to build a replica store inside a vacant warehouse in the Precedent South Business Center, Greenwood building commissioner Lowell Weber said. The mock-up store will be used to familiarize employees with a new store layout that Walgreens is rolling out.

The pharmacy chain is remodeling about 40 stores throughout Indiana, including two in Greenwood.

Walgreens plans to spend about $1 million to remodel its stores on Smith Valley Road and State Road 135 and U.S. 31 and Smith Valley Road.

Walgreens also is building a store at State Road 135 and County Line Road, cater-cornered from an existing pharmacy in a strip mall at the northeast corner of the intersection.

Remodeled stores will feature a new design intended to make it easier for customers to find their way around, Weber said. Walgreens employees will come to Greenwood to learn how to shelve items and direct customers in the new layout.

The training center is expected to stay open for about seven or eight months, Weber said.
