A Greenwood minister arrived at his church Friday morning to find police and firefighters cleaning up gasoline that spilled in the parking lot.
Faith Missionary Baptist Church had two vans parked outside, and someone crawled under the vehicles and punched holes in the gas tanks, Pastor Steve Maxie said.
Maxie wasn’t sure if someone was trying to steal the gasoline or if they did it just to cause damage.
“Neither one of those vans have gas caps that lock. They could have siphoned it if they were trying to steal gas. They might have been in a hurry, and if it happened this morning, they might have got scared off,” Maxie said.
The damage occurred Friday morning at the church, 1640 Fry Road. The gas spill was fresh when he arrived at about 9 a.m. A neighboring business spotted the gas leak and called police and firefighters before he arrived.
White River Township and Greenwood firefighters were called to clean up the spill. None of the gas leaked into a creek behind the church, but some did flow into a storm drain on the property, Maxie said.
No other damage was found at the church.
