On the strength of a season-best score, defending champion Center Grove won Thursday’s Johnson County Girls Golf Meet at Hickory Stick Golf Club.
Leading the way for the Trojans was junior Sydney Abbott, who carded a 3-over par 74. Teammate Marissa Anderson was next with a 78 which included nine pars and three birdies.
Raquel Helton scored an 81, Shelby Shier an 83 and Hannah Wilson had an 85 for the Trojans.
Center Grove finished the 18-hole tournament with a season-low score of 316.
Greenwood was second with a score of 325, followed by Whiteland (364), Indian Creek (408), Franklin (409) and Edinburgh (478).
While Center Grove took the team title, Greenwood senior Shelby Johnson earned medalist honors by a firing a 1-over par 72.
“My drives were good and everything was going pretty well for me all day, although I struggled a little bit on the greens,” Johnson said. “As a senior, my expectations are very high this year. I’m hoping to make it to state as an individual, but with the team would be even better.
“I just try and stay focused and not get ahead of myself.”
Johnson also gave much credit to the Woodmen’s first-year coach Brittany Stephens.
“We absolutely love the new coach,” Johnson said. “She’s been a big influence on us this year.”
Abbott, who finished second behind Johnson, said her performance was just the kind of round she’s been looking for.
“This was the best round of my life. My short game is really coming together and I was hitting a lot more greens so I really couldn’t be happier,” Abbott said. “All the hard work we put in over the summer is really paying off right now.”
Greenwood also got a big day from Hannah Cross, who closed with an 81 after making par eight consecutive holes on the back nine. Melanie Hughes carded an 84 and Katie Lindstrom an 88.
For Whiteland, Taylor Lucas, the Warriors No. 4 player, finished with an 88 while Savannah Craven scored a 91 and Maddie Dolen a 92.
Leading the way for Indian Creek was junior Hannah Johnson with an 87.
Franklin’s low scorer was senior Lexie Elliott with a 98.
And for Edinburgh, senior Demi Hart carded a 108.
Selected to the all-county team from Center Grove were Abbott, Anderson and Helton. Joining the Trojans threesome from Greenwood were Johnson and Cross.
