Micah Ling's first volume of poetry, "Three Islands", explores the common theme among aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, mutinous seaman Fletcher Christian and Alcatraz prisoner Robert Stroud. A second collection of her poetry, "Sweetgrass", will be released in November. SUBMITTED PHOTO

On the surface, the famous subjects of Micah Ling’s poetry collection appear nothing alike.

Amelia Earhart was a famous aviator.

Fletcher Christian led the mutiny of the H.M.S. Bounty and steered it toward a South Seas island haven.

Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz,” was confined to prison for nearly his entire adult life.

But in Ling’s imagination, she sees three people connected by their isolation.
