State police are investigating shooting near Greenwood bar

Police are investigating the death of a man who shot himself outside a Greenwood business.

Nathaniel Quinn Harris, 34, of Bargersville, died after shooting himself in the chest behind Pepper’s, located at 299 State Road 135, in Greenwood, Greenwood Assistant Police Chief Matthew Fillenwarth said.

His former brother-in-law, an Indiana State Police trooper, tried but wasn’t able to take the gun away from Harris, Fillenwarth said.

Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting because one of their troopers was involved, Indiana State Police Sgt. Richard Myers said.

An autopsy has been scheduled for today, Johnson County Coroner Dave Lutz said.

The shooting happened at about 8:55 p.m. Saturday, Lutz said. Harris had gone behind Peppers where he met with his sister and his former brother-in-law, who had been worried about him, Fillenwarth said.

Harris took out a gun and pointed it at his sister and the trooper. His ex-brother-in-law fought with him, trying to take the gun away, but was not able to get the gun from Harris.

During the struggle, he heard a gunshot. Harris had shot himself in the chest, Fillenwarth said.

The trooper tried giving him CPR until police and medical crews arrive, but he did not have a pulse when emergency workers arrived, Fillenwarth said.
