Soak in flavor of southside

At this year’s Taste of the Southside, local food connoisseurs can follow their taste buds wherever they want.

They can nibble on pizza, pasta, sandwiches and cakes. Italian, Mexican, German and other ethnic foods will provide exotic flavors. Wines from Easley, Oliver and Mallow Run will slake any thirsts.

The annual Taste of the Southside event gives people the chance to sample a wide variety of local food, all in one location. More than 40 exhibitors have signed on to take part in the tasting, organized by the Greater Greenwood Chamber of Commerce.

The event will be 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Valle Vista Golf Club and Conference Center, 755 E. Main St., Greenwood.

The centerpiece of the Taste of the Southside has become the yearly Chef’s Challenge. Four area chefs will compete in two, 30-minute sessions to prepare whatever dish they can imagine with the ingredients provided.

Defending champion Richard Goss of Richard’s Kitchen and Brick Oven Pizza will square off against Donovan Koester of Augustino’s Italian Restaurant, Mike Heller of Main Street Grille and Greg Schiesser of Indiana Downs.

Around the competition, organizers have built the largest collection of food and beverage vendors on the southside. Booths will serve samples of their menu to passers-by, all covered under the prices of admission.

General admission is $40 at the door. Guests also are encouraged to bring canned food items to help support local food pantries.
