Millions of names have been searched, sorted and cataloged since the 1940 Census was released in April.
People have tracked down long distant cousins, their grandparents and great-grandparents. Some have even found themselves, a historical snapshot of the neighborhood they lived in and the people they used to know.
The hope is within the genealogical community, that task will become significantly easier.
Though initially organized by geographic district, a team of volunteers is tirelessly indexing every township and county in the 1940 Census by name. Their work, initially expected to take a year, likely will be done in half that time.
