Senior housing project seeks approval

Follow Daily Journal:

Construction of a new senior living complex is slated to start in June, giving residents older than  55 new apartment options in the Center Grove area.

Greenwood Senior Living LLC plans to build a 134-unit complex with 18 apartments for independent living, 76 for assisted living and 40 for residents who have

Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

The four-building Greenwood Senior Living complex will be built on 10 acres at 1200 Demaree Road and is expected to open in June 2015, company president Mark Waterfill said. Before beginning construction, the company has to get plan approvals from the city of Greenwood, he said.

The independent living apartments will be in three six-unit buildings, with apartments

ranging in size from about 1,000 square feet to 1,500 square feet. Twelve of the independent-living apartments have garages. All of the homes will be rentals, Waterfill said.

The assisted living building will be 74,000 square feet, with an exercise room, 20-seat movie theater, an activity room for events, a beauty and barber shop and a public restaurant.

The facility also will have a locked wing for residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Greenwood Senior Living also will provide a bus to take residents shopping or on outings or errands.

The company said it will employ 40 to 45 people in Greenwood as nurses and in maintenance, the kitchen and housekeeping.

“Greenwood is a very attractive community with a growing senior population,” Waterfill said. “There is competition, but we don’t mind competition because Greenwood is growing, and many of the competitors are full.”
