Two-time defending state champion and third-ranked Brebeuf was at the top of the leaderboard when the Center Grove Regional at Hickory Stick Golf Club ended Thursday afternoon.
Once Center Grove athletics director Jon Zwitt posted the final numbers, a large contingency of Braves fans let out an enthusiastic cheer for the maroon-clad golfers.
With a team score of 305, Brebeuf edged out runner-up Martinsville (305) on the fifth player’s score. Cathedral, the 2008 state champion, finished third, two strokes back.
The 2011 regional winner, No. 4 Avon, finished with a 308, but it would not be good enough to advance. Only the top three teams and top three individuals on non-advancing teams are eligible for the state finals at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin next week.
Earning medalist honors with a 4-under par 67 was Plainfield senior Rylan Porter. He, along with Quakers teammate Johnny Gulley, who fired a 71, and Perry Meridian freshman Dylan Windler, who came home with a 72, all qualified for the state finals.
Greenfield-Central Sectional winner Franklin was in the thick of things after completing the first nine holes and then faltered. The Grizzly Cubs (329) finished 10th, while Center Grove also had an up-and-down day, finishing ninth with a team score of 318.
