An ex-Greenwood Community High School teacher and coach who was arrested and charged with having a sexual relationship with a student had been seeing the teen for two months, according to court documents.
Tim Guilfoy, 36, has been charged with seven counts of child seduction. Guilfoy was charged for each of the sexual acts he performed with the student. He resigned from his job with the school during the weekend.
Under the law, adults can be charged with child seduction if they have a sexual relationship with someone between 16 and 18 years old and are in a position of trust or authority, including being a teacher.
Guilfoy and the student were discovered by police early Saturday morning in a pickup truck parked in the 8800 block of Madison Avenue, just north of the county line. Officers had been called to the area because someone thought the truck, which was running, looked suspicious. Police asked the driver twice to roll down the window and then saw Guilfoy and the student, who were both naked, according to Marion County court documents.
The female initially told police she was 18 but told officers she was 17 after they checked her identification, the documents said.
Guilfoy told police the girl was his student and that they had been having sex in the truck, the documents said.
The teen told police she knew Guilfoy because he was a teacher and the strength and conditioning coach at Greenwood Community High School. She also told police that she and Guilfoy started a relationship about two months ago while talking and texting on the phone and through social media. The teen said she sent Guilfoy sexually explicit messages and photos of her in her underwear, but he had indirectly encouraged her to do so, the documents said.
Guilfoy told investigators he and the student met in private on four occasions and didn’t have sex until the third and fourth meeting, the documents said.
On Friday, Guilfoy and the teen talked in person and through text messages and agreed to meet after a basketball game to have sex, the documents said.
Guilfoy had been a teacher at Greenwood since 2000 and coached girls golf for several years.
Greenwood school officials were told of Guilfoy’s arrest on Saturday. On Sunday, Guilfoy resigned from the school district.
He has been released from jail on $7,500 bond.
