When the Franklin woman awoke in the middle of the night and saw two strangers hovering over her, she thought they were burglars.

What Virginia Ross didn’t know was that the front of her home was burning, and the two firefighters who had been looking for her needed to get her out quickly before the flames spread to the back of the house.

Ross, the firefighters and Terry Cothran, Ross’ 51-year-old son, all escaped the fire unharmed early Wednesday. Police and firefighters were called about the blaze by a woman who was driving by the house at 295 Lynhurst St. and called 911. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
