On Black Friday, Officer Mary Helms was between shifts patrolling the streets Franklin, but she stayed in uniform.

Instead of watching for speeders or responding to 911 calls, her job was to keep the peace at Walmart in Franklin, where shoppers were racing back and forth from the parking lot to the store, looking for holiday discounts.

And even though the store’s parking lot and aisles were packed, Black Friday was slightly calmer than a typical shift at the police department, Helms said.
