A Needham man lost nearly $4,000 after becoming the victim of an email scam, police said.
The man received an email early Tuesday he believed had come from a friend. The email said they were traveling in the Philippines, had been robbed and needed money.
The man sent $3,813 to the sender of the email in two different wire transfers, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report said.
Later, the man contacted relatives of the person he believed had sent the email. They told him that their family was fine, that they hadn’t been out of town and that the email account had been hacked, the report said.
They also gave police an email address the messages may have come from, the report said.
