Police: Local woman falls for Facebook scam

Follow Daily Journal:

A Center Grove area woman sent $1,000 to Nigeria in what police are calling a scam.

The 61-year-old woman recently joined Facebook and believed she had won an online lottery, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

A man who said he was a federal agent contacted the woman to say she won $150,000 and needed to send a $1,000 money order to a location in Nigeria before she would receive her winnings, the report said.

The woman received a link to the lottery site in a Facebook message from someone she believed was an old acquaintance. She later realized the profile was fake and another identical one existed, the report said.

The woman contacted police after realizing the $1,000 had already been withdrawn, and she wanted to make others aware of the scam, the report said.
