Two boys, ages 9 and 10, told police they played with a lighter and lit a corn field on fire in Johnson County.
Between a half acre and an acre of corn burned at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday at a property near the Needham fire station in the 3800 block of N. County Road 700E. The boys told police they had lit a leaf on a corn stalk on fire, then tried to put out the flames, but it got out of control, according to a police report.
They ran home and did not call the fire department, the report said.
The Johnson County Juvenile Probation office will decide what, if any, charges should be filed, Sheriff Doug Cox said. The children were questioned and released to their parents, he said.
