A neighbor’s pit bull killed a Trafalgar woman’s small dog, and county animal control took away the larger dog this week.
The pit bull had attacked and killed Sharon Smith’s shih tzu named Chloe. Smith called the police, and an officer got the pit bull away from the shih tzu.
This week, animal control took the pit bull to the Johnson County Animal Shelter, and workers will watch it for 10 days to see if it’s aggressive prior to deciding what to do with it, animal warden Michael Delp said. So far, the dog has been growling at animal shelter workers who walk by, he said.
Usually, animal control doesn’t take a dog that killed another animal, Delp said, but he decided this was an extreme case and that Smith’s other small dog and her miniature horses were in danger.
Sharon Smith said she is a hairstylist and was worried for her clients.
The owner of the pit bull didn’t know how the dog escaped her house, and the dog could possibly have gotten out again, Delp said.
