An 18-year-old man was shot in the hand during an attempted robbery outside a southside restaurant early Wednesday.
Police are now looking for two men who were seen running from the scene of the shooting at Steak ‘n Shake at U.S. 31 and Stop 11 Road.
Engin Erciyas, 18, of Indianapolis, was waiting on food he ordered from Steak ‘n Shake about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday. He stepped outside the restaurant at 7960 U.S. 31 to smoke a cigarette.
While he was in the parking lot, two men in dark clothing approached him and demanded he give them his money, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.
Erciyas started running toward the restaurant’s front door when he heard a loud bang. An employee inside the restaurant heard the bang as well and then saw two people running west from the restaurant site.
As soon as Erciyas was inside the restaurant, he realized he had been shot through his left hand, near his fingers, the report said.
Neither Erciyas nor the Steak ‘n Shake employee was able to give police a description of the two men, the report said.
Indianapolis police are investigating. No arrests have been made, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Sgt. Linda Jackson said.
Erciyas was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, the report said.
He was treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.
