A Morgantown woman was arrested after police said she stole her father’s car when he said she couldn’t borrow it.
Amber Nichole Barnett, 29, 7393 W. County Road 50S, was arrested on charges of auto theft, possession of cocaine, narcotics or methamphetamine, driving while suspended with a previous conviction, and leaving the scene of an accident.
Barnett visited her father in Franklin on Thursday and asked to borrow his car. After he told his daughter no several times, Barnett went outside and took the car, Bargersville assistant police chief Todd Bertram said.
Barnett was found driving slowly on Whiteland Road near State Road 135 after another driver in the area called police. One of the front wheels of the car looked like it was about to fall off, Bertram said.
“The big problem is that we don’t know what she hit or where she wrecked,” Bertram said.
Barnett told police the damage happened in a grocery store parking lot when she turned the wheel too much trying to get into a parking space and hit something. Police visited the grocery store parking lot but did not find any signs of damage caused by the car, Bertram said.
Police found cocaine in the car and are awaiting results from a blood test checking for intoxication, Bertram said.
Barnett was taken to the Johnson County jail, where she was being held on $16,000 bond.
