A Greenwood man accidentally shot himself when his handgun fell out of its holster and went off.
Michael Hutton suffered a gunshot wound to the pelvis and was taken to Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis on Thursday. He was listed in good condition Friday, according to hospital spokesman Gene Ford.
The accidental shooting happened about 4 p.m. in Hutton’s home in the 2400 block of Harvest Moon Drive in Greenwood.
Hutton was talking with two brothers in the family room of the home and told them he needed to rest for a while. He went back to his bedroom and closed the door.
A few minutes later, they heard a gunshot and a scream, according to a police report.
One of the brothers went to check on Hutton and found him lying on the floor screaming, the report said. The man applied pressure to Hutton’s wound until police arrived. The other brother called 911, unloaded the gun and put it on the kitchen table.
Hutton told police he was standing in the bedroom and getting ready to lie down when the gun fell out of the holster and discharged. The gun and holster had been tucked into his sweatpants, the report said.
