An Indianapolis man was arrested after trying to cash a stolen check at a bank in Greenwood.
James Sills, 43, 1309 N. Pennsylvania St., was arrested on charges of fraud, theft and forgery.
The manager of a First Merchants Bank in Greenwood called police after Sills tried to cash a check for $2,769 that was made out to him. The manager told police they believed the check was stolen from an Indianapolis-based homebuilding company because checks stolen from the company had been cashed at other First Merchants Bank branches around Johnson County, a Greenwood Police Department report said.
Sills first told police that he was a roofer being paid by the company. He later told investigators that someone in Indianapolis offered to pay him $95 if he cashed the check, the report said.
Sills was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was being held on $15,000 bond.
