Letter: Work continues on veterans memorial

To the editor:

Approximately two years ago, a committee was formed to build a veterans memorial in Freedom Park in Greenwood, the purpose being to honor all those who have served or are serving in the armed forces at home or abroad.

We also will honor those who have served or are serving as police or firefighters. Our committee has spent countless hours and considerable effort to make this memorial something of which we can all be proud.

It is taking more time to complete the project than anticipated because the total amount of money needed is $500,000.

We are doing it in stages, but rest assured the project will be completed as planned.

The recent news from Boston emphasizes what our police and firefighters do in case of emergency, and they risk their lives for us every day.

Our men and women serving in the armed forces are separated from their families and serve in God-forsaken places and are dying for their country. The memorial will also be a great asset to Freedom Park and the city of Greenwood.

Anyone wanting to help promote this worthwhile veterans memorial project to honor our wonderful veterans can call me at 881-1327.
