To the editor:

While traveling south on Nineveh Road on Nov. 10 with my son, we observed our nation’s flag being flown upside down in a citizen’s yard.

Because we are both veterans and take the honor of our flag very seriously, we stopped and knocked on the person’s door to see if it might have been an honest mistake. We got no answer. We started to correct the mistake but felt it would be trespassing.

We can only hope this was an honest mistake and not some kind of protest. If it’s a protest, please, please find another way to protest. If it’s because of the recent elections, you must remember that as Americans who are represented by that flag, none of us lost anything because we live in a free country where we have rights to vote freely, and yes, we have the right to fly the flag upside down.

But as a veteran who fought in a a war to protect that flag and you, I don’t really appreciate seeing it desecrated.

If it’s a protest, please protest another way, and if it was an honest mistake just look up the next time you raise the flag before you walk away. Take a look at that glorious protector of our freedoms and you will know if it’s right side up.
