Letter: Restricting, removing guns step in wrong direction

To the editor:

Restricting or removing guns from law-abiding citizens only makes yourself, your family or anyone near you more vulnerable to crimes. It has been shown that between 2 million and 3 million crimes in this country are prevented every year by responsible people being armed.

Also, I feel more than ever we need to defend against all possibilities. Adolf Hitler said in a 1935 speech “This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future.”

A short time later he began transporting millions of his own people to death camps to be gassed to death and then cremated. He then began a war that killed tens of millions and left his country devastated and in ruin. We don’t know what is going to happen here but we need to have at least a chance to protect ourselves from all possibilities.

Yes, there have been several horrible mass murders. The main problem is guns in the hands of deranged persons.

The privacy laws have gone overboard in this area. Any doctor who has a patient that shows deranged and mentally unbalanced symptoms and could be a threat to society should be required to report this to the proper authorities just as they are required to report when they see a child who appears to have been abused.

So-called assault rifles, which of course are also defensive weapons that have been used in these mass murders, have been semiautomatic and not full automatic as some would have you believe. They cannot spray bullets as some believe and don’t shoot any faster than a handgun. However they can hold more in a magazine and are more powerful.

If any changes in the law are made we must be very careful and (not) let that be a foot-in-the-door policy to more elimination of your right to be able to protect yourselves.

Police overall do a good job, but they can’t be everywhere, and it is usually too late by the time they arrive.

Maybe they catch the perpetrator and keep him from hurting someone down the road, but that’s too late for you. You must be able to defend yourself against all possibilities. Most of us are not surrounded by armed personal guards to protect us like President Barack Obama and his family.
