Greenwood Common Council District Four
To the editor:
I am compelled to write this letter for the readers of the Daily Journal and especially to those of Greenwood in general and to my constituents in particular.
I reference the article on the front page of the Daily Journal dated July 25, entitled “Lobbyist hired to aid city agenda.” At first glance, the casual reader would most likely conclude that this action by the Greenwood Common Council was unanimous; however, it was not. The reporter inadvertently left out what the vote tally was (7-2).
For my constituents (whether they agree with me or not), I was one of two members who did not support this motion to spend $30,000 from the general fund to employ a lobbyist for the council. I did not support this action for a number of reasons. Herein are a few.
This action came at the tail end of the agenda with no prior notice for adoption. It was done with a simple majority voice vote.
We already spend taxpayer money by supporting IACT (Indiana Association of Cities and Towns).
We have elected state officials from our area to look out for our best interest.
I believe that I was elected in part to be an advocate for the taxpayers of Greenwood. That being said, I believe this taxpayer money is/will be an unwise use of funds. I do not intend to point fingers at anyone but to show my displeasure to this transaction by the council and the article in the Daily Journal.
