To the editor:

First of all, thanks for naming a few names, it helps connect the dots.

For example Fred Paris, ex-mayor, is on tap to receive $245,000, the largest grant in your list (“Weather, other factors stall progress,” April 1). I’m not sure, but wasn’t the Franklin Development Commission established under his administration and didn’t he have a say in who was appointed to this commission?

And by the way, just what are these unelected commission members paid to subjectively allot tax dollars to private property owners?

I totally disagree with the concept of using public tax dollars to improve private property. It becomes especially egregious when unelected people are put in charge of distributing the money, in this example $5 million. An objective observer strolling through downtown Franklin might wonder just where that much money could have possibly been spent, new facades or not. I know I sure do.

Just think what 5 million bucks could have done to improve our streets. Abolish the Franklin Development Commission — it has been an expensive failure.
