To the editor:
In the letter from Cassie Burnett (Daily Journal, Sept. 14), she believes that if her group manages to hand in the correct paperwork for an incorporation of a town, that the commissioners will be duty-bound to vote their wishes in immediately.
Having a town with approximately 11,873 parcels of property and a handful of very small businesses cannot be done — and with the leaders of this movement, the town of Center Grove will be in bankruptcy court in short order. They cannot seem to do the math.
By the way, for their information, we have nearly 2,000 signatures now. That is one-third the signatures needed, and we intend to get a lot more, enough signatures to put the whole thing to rest, once and for all.
Also, we are making the commissioners well aware that three-fourths of the people in White River Township do not want this town. It is not in the best interests of the residents in this area. We are making sure the commissioners know it would be like a large homeowners association run by the Veldkamps and Cassie Burnett and their associates.
We don’t have a vote for a town, and we certainly won’t have a vote after it becomes a town. The town council would select the town manager. We have all been pretty independent for a long time and we want to stay that way — and not be ruled by more government.
We also think White River Township is a wonderful place to live, and we want to keep it that way.
Oh yes, one more item to consider: Does the “for” group think, for even one minute, that the Greenwood mayor and city council have not taken note of the events going on in White River Township?
If I could bet on it, I do not think Greenwood would let this area become a town because they also are aware of the Interstate 69 freeway coming through here in a few years and that there will be exits off of it with businesses there. Then they will want to annex White River Township, and the “no-towners” would not have an objection to that.
We all would rather be part of Greenwood than be the bankrupt, dinky town of Center Grove.
By the way, if you want to sign our petition against the town, give me a call at 641-5245.
