Franklin College sophomore women’s basketball forward Katie Brewer and junior men’s track and field athlete Patrick Ellis have been recognized for outstanding performances as Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week.
Brewer had a pair of double-digit scoring and rebounding games in helping the women’s basketball team post a single-game HCAC field goal percentage record last week.
The sophomore forward averaged 11.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game and led the Grizzlies in blocks (4.0 bpg) and assists (4.0 apg) in two games.
Brewer had a career-high 15 rebounds against Earlham College on Saturday. That performance was one better than the 14-rebound effort she had against Transylvania University on Feb. 12, along with 13 points and six blocks. She made 10 of 11 shots (90.9 percent), including her only three-point field goal attempt for the week.
Brewer leads Franklin in scoring (11.1 ppg), rebounding (8.4 rpg) and blocks (60) on the season.
Ellis had a school-record effort in winning the long jump (22 feet, 1.50 inches) and had a runner-up finish in the triple jump (44 feet, 11.75 inches) to lead the men’s indoor track and field team to a third-place finish at the DePauw Invitational last Saturday.
Both of his efforts are the top marks in the HCAC this season.
