Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus will offer an aviation operations certificate program starting this fall.
Registrations are being accepted now for the course. Fall classes start Aug. 25. The class will allow students to earn a private pilot’s license.
The program will be offered in partnership with the Columbus Municipal Airport, which will provide the training grounds, and Jeff Air Pilot Services in Greenwood, which will provide a plane and the flight training.
The program is a two-semester, 18-credit-hour program with six courses. Classes will teach general regulations and laws, aerodynamics, aircraft systems, cross-country planning, how to read weather reports and maps, and other topics. Students also will learn aviation security.
Students will split their time between classroom instruction at Ivy Tech and field instruction at the Columbus Municipal Airport.
Ivy Tech officials hope to expand the program into a two-year aviation management degree program, with the credits transferring to a four-year bachelor’s degree program eventually.
