Drivers on Interstate 465 near the Interstate 65 interchange will notice a shift in the eastbound lanes beginning today.
Traffic is being shifted away from the median as work continues on a $40 million project to improve the interchange. Workers will be paving parts of the road and building bridge piers, which are the foundation pieces that support a bridge’s weight.
Work has also begun on constructing auxiliary lanes that will allow drivers getting on the interstate at Southport Road to travel to I-465 without merging into traffic on I-65.
A two-lane flyover ramp is also part of the project and will allow drivers to drive the same speed as they travel from westbound I-465 to southbound I-65. Workers will have to reconstruct the ramp from I-465 eastbound to I-65 southbound in order to make room for the new, larger ramp.
