Local animal shelters have received a grant that will be used to help save the lives of homeless cats.
The national cat advocacy organization Alley Cat Allies has awarded the Humane Society of Johnson County $5,000 to expand neutering programs, volunteer networks and educational efforts.
The Johnson County Animal Shelter will work with the local Humane Society, which will be included in a study for other communities to demonstrate how the programs can be used.
One of the programs the grant will focus on was recently expanded in the county. The program traps feral cats and brings them to a veterinarian to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ear-tipped. The tip of the left ear is removed while the cat is anesthetized to identify the cat as sterilized and vaccinated. After a short recovery period, the cats are returned to their outdoor homes.
