Host Mount St. Joseph held the football longer but Franklin College’s defense gave up nothing in their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football showdown on Saturday afternoon.

The Grizzlies shut out the Lions 38-0 to improve to 3-0 in the conference and 3-2 overall while Mount St. Joseph dropped to 1-3 in the HCAC and 2-3 overall.

Moreover, Franklin, ranked 22nd in the D3football.com Top 25 Poll this week, claimed its third-straight win against Mount St. Joseph and chalked up its 21st-straight victory in HCAC contests.

Since 2004, only Franklin and the Lions have earned the league’s regular-season championships.

Frankin junior quarterback Jonny West connected with junior split-end Kyle Linville on three touchdown pass plays, senior kicker Cole Richards kicked a 27-yard field goal and senior linebacker Jimmy Qualters got to touch the football on offense late in the game, rushing for a 2-yard touchdown for the Grizzlies.

West, who also threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to sophomore split-end Wes Shambaugh in the second period, completed 20 of 29 passes for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns with an interception on the day.

Linville made 7 receptions for 89 yards, running his touchdown catch total to nine this season. Franklin finished with 356 total offensive yards to the Lions’ 171. The Lions had possession for 33-plus minutes to the Grizzlies’ 26-plus minutes.

Junior linebacker Scott Moore made 10 total tackles and had an interception to spur Franklin’s defense. Junior linebacker Jordan Segner and sophomore safety Jameson Brock contributed 9 total tackles each.
