The Franklin College men’s basketball team concluded nonconference play Thursday night with an 83-67 loss at No. 3-ranked NCAA Division III Illinois Wesleyan University.
Illinois Wesleyan (10-1) used two scoring spurts to capture the victory. The Titans closed the first half on a 10-3 run and led 33-30 at halftime. A 10-0 run midway through the second half gave the hosts a 57-44 lead.
Senior guard Bailey Howard scored 21 points to lead Franklin (5-5). He entered the game ranked fourth nationally in scoring at 25.1 points per game.
Bailey’s performance marked the seventh time he has scored 20 or more points in a game this season.
Senior Terry Sargent and sophomore Trae Washington each added nine points for the Grizzlies.
Illinois Wesleyan was led by Andrew Ziemnik’s 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Titans had four double-figure scorers and shot 53 percent from the floor.
Franklin returns to action at 3 p.m. today against visiting Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Earlham College as part of a men’s and women’s doubleheader. The Grizzlies women’s team hosts Earlham at 1 p.m.
