Two people were arrested Tuesday afternoon when an off-duty police officer saw them drive around a parking lot and get into a car.
Christy Steger, 39, and Emora Bruce, 35, both of Indianapolis, were arrested on charges of criminal trespassing and theft.
The off-duty Johnson County sheriff’s deputy had pulled into the L.A. Fitness parking lot off of State Road 135 around noon. He saw the couple slowly drive around the lot, looking at parked vehicles, according to the police report.
The officer called the Greenwood Police Department to report suspicious activity. He then saw a man later identified as Bruce get out of his vehicle, open the door to a parked Pontiac Grand Prix and get inside for a short time.
Officers stopped the couple as they left the parking lot. Inside the car, officers found a wallet belonging to the owner of the Grand Prix, according to the report.
Steger told police she had been evicted from her apartment, where Bruce was living with her. The couple needed money to drive to Ohio, where Bruce’s family lived, she said.
Steger and Bruce, 2710 S. East St., Indianapolis, were each held on $4,000 bond.
