Breezing to semifinals victories Friday, familiar rivals Greenwood and Center Grove will duel in this morning’s championship match of the girls tennis sectional at Center Grove.
The defending champion Woodmen advanced with a 5-0 win against Indian Creek. Center Grove reached the final by beating Franklin by the same score.
Seventh-ranked Greenwood, powered by a dominating singles lineup comprised of three seniors, are bidding for a third straight trip to the team state finals.
Twin sisters Jade and Jackie Kawamoto are undefeated this year respectively at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, and Makenzie Estrem has been formidable all season at No. 3 singles.
All three players, along with the Woodmen’s doubles teams, were in top form against Indian Creek.
Jade Kawamoto defeated junior Allyson Pierce 6-0,6-0. Jackie Kawamoto beat senior Bre Berger 6-0, 6-0. And at No. 3 singles,
Estrem defeated freshman McKayla Russell 6-0, 6-1.
Greenwood coach Steve Gantz said the team continues to lay the groundwork for postseason success.
“It makes a big difference to have a very good singles lineup, and we’re hoping to use that experience against Center Grove,” Gantz said. “They play really strong competition, and that will help them, too.
“We know it’s going to be a tough championship match, but we have a lot of experience at a lot of positions, so we’re looking forward to it.”
Greenwood’s No. 1 and 2 doubles teams also were victorious.
At No. 1 doubles, junior Ali Youngman and sophomore Joanna Moran defeated junior Katie Huter and sophomore Baylee Wilson 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 2 doubles, senior Madison Gaudian and sophomore Abby Chatham defeated senior Guenevere Clear and sophomore Sydney Johnson 6-0, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Center Grove (8-13) required considerable more court time but prevailed 5-0 against the Grizzly Cubs, who close the season at 11-7.
At No. 1 singles, senior Jillian Fledderman outlasted Franklin senior Hannah Hook 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Winning at No. 2 singles was senior Priya Dave against senior Mary Huffine 6-3, 6-3.
And at No. 3 singles, freshman Katelyn Gray got by junior Lexi Hash in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
In the doubles competitions, Center Grove senior Kaitlyn Walsh, who has been a guiding force the past three seasons while having to play with three different partners, combined with freshman Bailey Sammons to defeat Franklin juniors Ashlyn Smith and Katie Bemis 6-2, 6-4.
In the No. 2 doubles match, Center Grove senior Kim Spindler and sophomore Madison Smeathers came away with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against junior Kaitlyn Ogden and sophomore Nina Biasi 6-2, 6-3.
