A.J. Edds, a former star at Greenwood Community High School, has signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets.
Edds, a 6-foot-4, 256-pound linebacker who most recently played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2012, signed last week at the conclusion of the Jets’ rookie mini camp.
A fourth-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2010, Edds, 26, missed his entire rookie season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in training camp.
In 2011, he was waived by the Dolphins just before the regular-season opener but was signed by the New England Patriots a few days later. He played two games for the Patriots, was waived, then signed to the team’s practice squad.
Signed from New England’s practice squad by the Colts, Edds finished the season in Indianapolis. He played in nine games, primarily on special teams.
In 2012 with the Colts, Edds suffered another ACL tear in training camp and missed the entire season. In 2013, he rejoined the Patriots but was cut during training camp.
A three-year starter at Iowa, Edds sat out the entire 2013 season but continued to prepare himself for another shot at playing.
Edds, who has 13 career tackles, including 12 with the Colts, got his opportunity following a successful tryout at the Jets’ rookie mini camp. He signed on May 19.
