Fundraiser planned to assist stroke victim’s family

Follow Daily Journal:

A Center Grove area family will get help with bills and home upkeep from a fundraiser next week.

Johnson County Community Angels, a nonprofit created to assist people and their families during treatment for debilitating diseases, will host a fundraising concert to help Chris and Jane Buchanan at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Rathskeller in Indianapolis. The event will include a concert by Indianapolis cover band Tastes Like Chicken as well as a silent auction.

All proceeds will help the family with costs that have built up over the past year after Chris Buchanan suffered a stroke, ranging from upkeep of their home to youngest son Kyle Buchanan’s college tuition.

“It just blew me away that people would think of us like that,” said Jane Buchanan, Chris Buchanan’s wife.

In May 2013, Chris Buchanan suffered a stroke after mowing the lawn. When he lost consciousness, he fell and fractured his skull as well. The injury caused significant brain damage, leaving Chris Buchanan partially paralyzed and unable to work.

To support the family, his wife Jane Buchanan has picked up part-time jobs to supplement her position in the Marion County public defender’s office.

Their struggle was noticed by Community Angels. Since being founded in 2011, the group has tried to not only raise money for families dealing with medical traumas, but to provide services to ease their daily struggles. Volunteers run personal errands for local families, provide child care, mow lawns and cook meals for them. So far, the group has helped 12 local families.

“There are people out there that want to help, and a lot of them don’t know how to do it,” said Beth Harriman, founder of Community Angels.

The organization already had been involved with the Buchanan family by mowing their lawn during the summer. Volunteers also had helped repair the family’s house.

Admission to the event is $10. Donations also will be accepted for the family.
