The five players representing Franklin Community High School at today’s boys golf regional won’t need a crash course when it comes to the 18-hole layout.
Hickory Stick Golf Club serves as the Grizzly Cubs’ home course, which means they know the teebox-to-pin placement 18 times over. They know where to hit the ball and what locations to steer clear of, if at all possible. And when to play a fade and in which direction a putt should break.
How such familiarity benefits coach Curt Holcroft’s team remains an unsolved puzzle, especially considering the 12-team field includes third-ranked and two-time defending state champion Brebeuf and No. 4 Avon. Regional host Center Grove, ranked 17th, also promises to be heard from, as does Cathedral.
Franklin, meanwhile, hasn’t been among the state’s top 20 at any time this season. But if momentum means anything, the Cubs could find themselves as one of the three teams advancing to next week’s IHSAA State Finals at The Legends in Franklin.
